Tucker Origin
_
Before we dive to deep into the Tucker surname origin we need to know a little about our Tucker family migration patterns first. What is known via ydna testing is that our ancient Tucker ancestor came from Scandinavia and went to England then his descendants went from England to Colonial America. This time span is probably somewhere between 700 A.D. to the mid 1600's A.D. The question remains of how our ancient Tucker ancestor got into England. However, after researching England's history and what we know about our Tucker's yDNA we can pin it down to the Norse from Norway. Our ydna haplogroup is R1a and the sub group (SNP) is L448. However, each day this sub group is getting divided into more and more sub groups which allows for more accurate pinpointing of area and time frame. Our Tucker ydna group has now tested positive for SNP YP609 which is below YP355 and L448, meaning that we are L448, YP355 and now YP609. This means that we are descended from someone from Norway probably around a thousand years ago.
I have yet to determine the origin of the surname TUCKER but there are quite a few possibilities. I would imagine that our Tucker ancestors were a mix of Scandinavian, Celtic and Germanic ethnicity's given England's history. Our ancient Tucker ancestor more than likely entered England as among one of the Norwegian (Norse) Viking bands. This Tucker ancestor probably came to England anywhere in between 700 A.D. and 1086 A.D. as this was the time span that the Norse were settling (among other things) in the British Isles. From this time until they sailed for the New World in the mid 17th century, our Tucker ancestors lived in England.
They were almost certainly a mixture of Celtic and Germanic admixture as most of England is. Our Tucker line is perceived to be from the English county of Devon which has a rich Celtic heritage, the Dumnonii to be exact as Devon was one of the last counties in England to fall under Saxon rule. Once the Normans conquered the Anglo-Saxons, Devon became part of the new kingdom now known as England.
The Anglo-Saxons were Germanic tribes that migrated into England from around the mid 5th century and held power until William the Conqueror and his Norman forces invaded. Prior to the Anglo-Saxon the Celtic tribes ruled over the British Isles and their DNA still makes up a large percentage of the population today. The Romans were also in England for a time before the Anglo-Saxons made their way to England.
So as you can see the genetic makeup of England is a mixture of Celtic, Germanic and Viking ancestries. Since our Tucker ancestors were in England for so long they simply became over time "English". I would safely say that our Tucker's were English with Germanic and Celtic ancestry and the Tucker male paternal line finds itself being from Norway as verified by ydna testing prior to its arrival to the British Isles.
